The Best Things We Bought In 2019

In the past couple of years, I feel like I’ve found my feet with buying great products for Josie and Edie whether it’s a certain type of treat or a collar that lasts longer than a couple of months. When they were both puppies I found that I wasted quite a lot of money on things that didn’t stand the test of time and being a first-time dog owner it was all trial and error on my behalf. Now I’m a couple of years into dog mum life I’m not only buying things that are better quality but they’re things that are dependable too as every owner needs something they can rely on and these are some of my best purchases from 2019.

redhound for dogs norfolk wax coat

This coat had been on my to buy list for years, ever since I discovered Redhound for Dogs it was the coat that I wanted to buy but Josie was a puppy then and there’s no way she could be trusted with such a beautiful coat. Even now it’s a risky move putting not having something washable but I just couldn’t resist it any longer and if you saw our last post you’ll see just how beautiful Josie and Edie look in them. Wax coats are something that are lightweight but incredibly warm and waterproof too, which is why I’ve coveted them for so long and the design of the Norfolk coat is simply beautiful. It’s like no other dog coat I’ve ever seen before and it’s the perfect option to go over the top of a fleece or a snood for an extra layer of warmth. To keep these coats clean you simply need to get a damp cloth and wipe away any dirt or if it's dry then a brush will get rid of it.

Falconry Bells

Something we started using last year to help us keep track of Josie in the woods is falconry bells and they’ve completely changed how our walks go. We can now hear her whenever she dashes into the trees to have a snuffle around and it’s taken a lot of the worry out of where she is as she’s often that not far away at all. We simply pop them on her collar and then get to enjoy the little tune of her jangling around and even though we don’t have a huge issue with her trying to catch things it does warn any animals in the area that there is a dog around. If you’ve got a dog who likes to explore in the woods and are particularly light on their feet or have a dark coat like Josie I cannot recommend falconry bells enough.

devil dood designs rope lead

Leads are something that I’m quite fussy about and for a while, I’ve wanted to get shorter leads as walking two dogs with a lot of slack lead dangling around is a slight disaster. For the most part, Josie and Edie are off lead and then when they are on the lead it’s for a reason and we want them to be close and having a shorter lead is ideal. I got these beautiful simple rope leads custom made from Devil Dood Designs and they’re perfect, they’re 2.5ft and that’s the perfect length for us. They still have enough room to sniff at leisure but it helps them stay at my side rather than pulling ahead which is something we were struggling with. I’m certainly going to be purchasing another set of these leads with brass hardware in the next couple of months as I absolutely adore them.

the trendy whippet rustic leather collars

Traditional leather hound collars are something I love the look of but I’d struggled with in the past as Edie has really fine thin fur on her neck so it doesn’t take much for her to lose all her fur in that area if a collar isn't super soft. I picked up these collars from The Trendy Whippet in June and I cannot recommend them enough, they’ve withstood so many fox poo rolls and wrestling matches and they’re still in fantastic condition. They are a lovely rustic leather and the inside is lined with suede so they’re nice and soft on sensitive whippet necks. To keep them looking good I simply use leather polish on them and that keeps them supple and protected from the elements too.
