The Best Documentaries To Watch This Weekend
We all know that I'm a big lover of binge watching tv shows but nothing beats a good documentary for me. Because what is better than unwinding by watching something but learning too? I'm always on the hunt for interesting and thought provoking watches and here are some of my all time favourites.
blackfish
I'm sure the majority of us have watched this already as it was incredibly popular a couple of years ago. It follows the world renowned water wildlife park Seaworld and the truth behind how they keep their animals and all the travesties that have happened over the years. It's a pretty heartbreaking watch to see what's happened to these incredible animals and it really opens your eyes to the cost that they pay for our entertainment. Whilst I'm sure we'd all love the chance to see these magnificent animals it should never be in these conditions.
HUNGRY FOR CHANGE
Food documentaries always fascinate me because I think it's important to know what happens to what you're consuming. Hungry For Change is incredibly interesting as it sheds light on the way that diets work and how they're never going to be effective in the long run. Often documentaries on food and diet can be slightly preachy but I didn't find HFC like that. It doesn't push one way of eating onto you and rather just gives you the facts about not only the way we eat but why we pick up the foods that we do.
EDUCATING ESSEX
Having had some experience working in education I absolutely love the Educating Essex/Yorkshire series. It's incredible to see the reality of what it's like to be in a school in this current day and what the teachers deal with on a daily basis. I don't think teaching is ever shown in a realistic light and this has been one of the only documentaries to do that. Of course, it goes without saying that you can't help but fall in love with the students and find yourself relating to them and remembering what it was like when you were at school.
LOUIS THEROUX
It wouldn't be a post about documentaries without mentioning Louis Theroux, would it? After his two new recent documentaries, I just had to go back and watch his old ones as they're incredible. He approaches really tough harrowing subjects but he does it in such a level headed way and he's not afraid to be open minded and a little vulnerable. My favourites are Louis & The Most Hated Family in America 1 & 2, Louis & The Zoo, The City Addicted to Crystal Meth and A Place For Paedophiles.
FAT, SICK AND NEARLY DEAD
This is an incredibly famous health documentary. It follows a middle-aged man who is overweight and has an auto-immune disease and has to take a lot of medication to get through day to day life. Having had personally taken the medication that Joe Cross was taking on a daily basis I know how severe the side effects are. He embarks on a 60-day fresh juice diet and the result are undeniably incredible and the stories that go alongside this documentary are nothing short of inspiring. It really opens your eyes to the power of a good diet and lifestyle and just how much it can help with diseases.
HOT GIRLS WANTED
I feel like it's very risky for me to mention a documentary like this. But Hot Girls Wanted is a film that sheds light on the adult entertainment industry in a completely different way to how it's been done before. It truly gets into the nitty gritty details of what it's like for young girls in that industry and just how dangerous it can be. As a young woman, I found it truly heartbreaking to see what these girls were choosing to do and the way that they were being treated.
VEGUCATED
This is the best Vegan documentary I've ever watched. I'm sure most would say it's Cowspiracy but that left far too many poignant questions unanswered for me. Vegucated, however, sheds light on how incredible eating a Vegan diet can be in so many different situations and how it affects different people. It also shows how it would affect society which is something I think about so often when it comes veganism. If you're after an incredible but balanced perspective on the topic then this is a great one to watch.
THE COVE
The Cove follows the heartbreaking subject of mass dolphin slaughter in Japan. It's incredibly sad to watch but the issues that are spoken about are so interesting but of course completely terrifying at the same time. Not only, of course, is mass slaughter devastating for the dolphin population but the chemicals that can be found in their meat is incredibly dangerous for human consumption. It's a pretty graphic watch as it contains disturbing footage so it's important to be aware of that if you find things of that nature too uncomfortable to watch.
